Atsuko Maeda's film “1905” has been cancelled after its production and distribution company filed for bankruptcy.
"1905" was set to be a big-budget film about imperialism, globalization and its affects on Japan at the beginning of the 1900s. The movie was going to star Atsuko Maeda alongside Chinese actor Tony Leung and Japanese actor Shota Matsuda.
Production and distribution house Prenom-H Co filed for bankruptcy after the movie's cost skyrocketed due to the Senkaku island dispute between Japan and China. Since the movie was a Japan-China joint production with 90% of the lines in Chinese, the dispute created tension among those involved with the film.
The Tokyo District Court has authorized Prenom-H Co to begin its bankruptcy proceedings. The company is believe to have 643 million yen (6.9 million USD) in liabilities.
"1905" was set to be released this coming Fall.
